Lions Christmas List

Lions Christmas wish lists

News

With Santa Claus set to make his annual sleigh-ride across the globe next week, it seemed an appropriate time to find out what some of the Lions players hope to find under their trees this Christmas.

Jonathan Brown is hoping for jocks and socks from his family as well as a DVD box set of the latest Prison Break series which he hasn’t had the time to watch on television. He would also like tickets to the USA’s 2008 Super Bowl in Arizona next March.

Pat Garner needs a new pair of board shorts to get him through the hot summer months.

Daniel Merrett is keeping his fingers crossed for a new frying pan and an overseas holiday.

Among other things, Jamie Charman wants a Borat-style mankini in Lions colours, a selection of JC 19 products from Number 19 Men’s Day Spa to keep him looking smooth over the Christmas festivities and a big kiss from Jennifer Hawkins.

Jed Adcock is hoping for a British Bulldog puppy to keep his staffy named ‘Misled’ company at home.

Troy Selwood wants some guitar lessons for Christmas so that he can learn to become as smooth as Joel Macdonald.

Western Australian ruckman Matthew Leuenberger is hoping to find a return flight from Brisbane to Perth underneath his tree on Christmas morning.

Co-captain Luke Power quite simply hopes for health and happiness over the Christmas break.

Justin Sherman’s Christmas wish list includes a new esky, an iPod Nano and tickets to see Matchbox Twenty in concert. He is also hoping that Santa brings him some homewares and appliances for his new house in Brisbane.

The Board, management, staff and players of the Brisbane Lions Football Club would like to thank all members and supporters for their continued support in 2007 and hope all their wishes come true this Christmas.

German footballer : OK if teamates gay

from wolfi's modern life:

Saturday, December 15, 2007

German Footballer On Cover Of Gay Magazine.

It's a first: A high profile football player on the cover of a German gay magazine. Philipp Lahm, currently playing for premier federal league team Bayern Muenchen and in the national team, is on the cover and the coverstory of Front Magazin. Don't get your hopes up high - he hasn't left his girlfriend and is doing his coming out interview, but he DOES offer his two cents on one of Germany's last taboos: Gays in football. Says Lahm: "I don't think it's necessarily a good idea to come out for a player. The point is: He'd be the first in the federal league. He'd expose himself, the media frenze would be enormous and how would it go on?" He continues to say that fans are not exactly politically correct when it comes to their favorite sport. But he wouldn't have a problem if someone was gay on his team. "If someone on the team was gay, he would still be a teammate and I wouldn't change anything about how I would be around them." Lahm likes living in an open and tolerant society.
Don't expect a high profile coming out any time soon in German football.

Here comes AFL Britain

BARFL to re-structure, AFL Britain likely

After meetings held recently in London, the British Australian Rules Football League looks set to re-structure and re-badge. Current plans would see a shift towards a national umbrella organisation, probably to be called AFL Britain. To provide a more defined structure, the London leagues will play under an organising body called AFL London, directly responsible for the Premiership, Conference and Social Leagues.

It should also consolidate recent improvements to their working relationship with Aussie Rules UK, which has seen collaboration between the GB Bulldogs and England Dragonslayers as well as Aussie Rules UK providing opportunities for London clubs to play their juniors in a new under 16s league.

New BARFL President Sam Percy, returning to the role after being BARFL pres from 2002-04, confirmed "AFL London was agreed as the name for the body organising the three divisions here. It is most likely the new name for BARFL will be AFL Britain, though we hope to have discussion with the AFL about that in the near future. As a governing body we are not going to run leagues directly. Leagues in Britain will affiliate with us, somewhat loosely in that they are free to run themselves. We'll provide guidance, geographical protection where possible and admin help with items such as insurance and a national-level website".

The plan is much in-line with what Percy had reported in October and what Glen Ocsko suggested prior to that in his UK Footy plan, and also resembles the current United States AFL model.

This new arrangement will be similar to the current situation where a league such as the Scottish Australian Rules Football League (SARFL) is affiliated but not directly run by the BARFL. The major change will be removing the need for the AFL Britain to directly run the London leagues, thus allowing a bigger picture national approach.

Lucky Lion Sherman

Lucky Lion Sherman dodges Death Infection:

Lion death fears
16 December 2007 Sunday Herald Sun
Damien Stannard

HE could have lost a leg or even his life - no wonder Justin Sherman considers himself lucky.

Justin Sherman
Lucky: Justin Sherman.

This year, Sherman's battle with the bacterial infection cellulitis robbed him of five AFL matches. The infection was a setback for his career - but he also could have paid for it with his life.

"Left untreated, it can be life-threatening," the Brisbane Lions midfielder said.

Sherman first noticed the infection days after playing a match for the reserves at Maroochydore.

Bacteria had entered his body through a blister on his foot and, as the burning rash advanced up his right leg, he knew something was wrong.

Only after being treated in hospital by an infectious diseases specialist did Sherman realise how fortunate he was.

"It got as high as my knee and I spent a week in hospital," the 20-year-old said.

"They say if it had got as high as my groin I could have lost a leg."

The Tasmanian said he was not offering illness as an excuse for what was a disappointing third season in the AFL. He also ignored the pain of a fractured toe.

Both setbacks will be used as lessons to ensure next season will be his best yet.

"The illness shocked me and I had to come to grips with it pretty quickly," Sherman said.

After finishing second to Simon Black in the 2006 club best-and-fairest award, he was expected to be a high achiever last season.

Instead, he played only 14 games and was dropped twice because of poor form.

Many observers thought representing Australia in the 2006 International Rules series sapped him of energy.

"Looking back, it probably did," Sherman said.

"I missed three weeks of the pre-season - that's nine running sessions - and that was vital."

The Australian team was coached by Kevin Sheedy and it was also Michael Voss' final outing.

"You don't get to represent Australia every day," he said.

"I played with Vossy in his last game, which was pretty special."

Lions co-captain Jonathan Brown said much was expected of Sherman next season.

"We all hope 'Shermo' can improve on last year," Brown said. "He had a great first two years of his career and last year was a bit of a downer. That can happen when you're young.

"Hopefully he bounces back and gets a good pre-season under his belt."

Every Lions player has been handed a personalised training program to prepare them for next season.

Some are bulking up and others are chasing speed records.

Sherman craves endurance so he can add another element to the midfield or provide impact as a scrounging forward.

Crikey! (Kyle just rolled his eyes and called me a cliche)

Play hard, play safe, play clean...but don't play macho if it's bad. Go to hospital.

THREE-WAY DEAL DONE

Thursday, October 11th, 2007 at 5:52 pm

BY NINO BUCCI

TRAVIS JOHNSTONE has became a Lion, Cameron Wood is now a Magpie and the No. 14 draft selection belongs to the Demons after the most complicated deal of this year’s trade week was finalised today.

Collingwood have traded their No. 14 selection in the national draft to Brisbane in exchange for ruckmen Cameron Wood, before the Lions then on-traded that pick to Melbourne for former No. 1 draft pick Travis Johnstone.

Despite earlier speculation that Magpie Rhyce Shaw would also figure in the trade, the defender did not figure in the completed deal.

It was the fourth deal to have been completed over the four days of trade week, with Adelaide’s Martin Mattner and John Meesen traded to Sydney and Melbourne respectively and Chris Judd traded to Carlton along with the No. 46 draft pick in exchange for Josh Kennedy and draft selections three and 20.

LIONS BOARD LEGEND STEPS DOWN

Thursday, September 20th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

LONG- TIME director Graeme Downie has officially retired from the Brisbane Lions after serving more than 15 years on the Club’s Board.

Downie joined the inaugural Brisbane Bears Board on 26 January 1992 as the Club had previously existed under private ownership with the Pelerman’s Liquor Group.

He was Club Chairman from February 2000 until February 2006 after being appointed Deputy Chairman in 1999. During his tenure, Mr Downie chaired the Audit & Finance and Football Committees at various times.

Lions Chairman Tony Kelly thanked Graeme for his long-time service and integral shaping of the Brisbane Lions Football Club.

“The facts really speak for themselves here. When Graeme first joined the Board, the Brisbane Bears had 5,400 members, a small turnover of $4.5 million and were the struggling ‘cellar dwellers’ down at the Gold Coast,” Mr Kelly said.

“With Graeme’s strong direction and commercial savvy leading the Board, the Club went from strength to strength winning three straight premierships and creating a modern AFL dynasty.

“Graeme had a massive influence on the Club in its formative years and its current success will be his legacy. You’ve got to remember the Club was really on the ropes at one stage and battling for survival in the early nineties."

Fuck you, Gerlado

This homophobe just said the magic words to get me off the fence:

9/11 truth protesters with WeAreChange & Alex Jones--gathered in NYC for a week of street actions and 9/11 responders benefit events--waved signs, chanting "9/11 Was an Inside Job" behind a live FOX News broadcast featuring a flustered and angry Geraldo Rivera. At one point Rivera says, as he introduces a segment on Larry Craig, "I think these demonstrators are all into restroom gay sex--ha ha ha."

Fuck you, Geraldo and fuck you again. Homophobia is alive and well, we knew that? But know what you did? You made it personal with every "closet" gay Truther. That's a crowded cupboard.

No more "closets". 9/11 IS an inside job. And everyone knows it. Have the balls to admit it. 9/11, 7/7, Bali... this is the same shit that happened in Northern Ireland. MI6 fucking it up to make the Irish look bad so British business could make money. Ask why there have been no other attacks on America? If the Yankees can't fund their war how can they be finding "Homeland Security" to stop "terrorists"?

They're not! The English and Americans are in it together! All to make money! God damn it its so obvious!

EQUATION EASY FOR LIONS

Monday, August 20th, 2007 at 8:33 am

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

BRISBANE gun forward Jonathan Brown says if the Lions are to make the finals they must win their next two games and hope West Coast also win their next two matches.

Speaking on SEN, Brown said the equation was easy for the Lions.

“It is a pretty easy equation for us,” Brown said.

“If we win our next two and West coast when their next two, we will be playing finals.

“We have a tough draw. We go to Adelaide over there and Geelong at home. Hopefully they (Geelong) decide to rest half their side when they come over here.”

Footyheads, the Lions play Adelaide (away) and Geelong (home), West Coast play St Klida (away) and Essendon (home). Will the Lions make the finals?

LIONS KEEN TO KEEP LETHAL

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007 at 9:18 am

BY NINO BUCCI

LEIGH Matthews will be approached by the Brisbane Lions before Christmas to ensure the four-time premiership coach remains at the club beyond 2008, The Age reported today.

Matthews would be offered a contract extension to prevent approaches from other clubs next season, club chairman Tony Kelly said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if someone came out and made the Godfather offer. In fact, I’d almost be offended if he wasn’t and I’ve got total faith he would broach it with me if he took it seriously. I suspect he’s been spoken to already,” Kelly said.

The Lions have exceeded pre-season expectations this year, currently sitting eighth on the AFL ladder with nine wins and a draw from 19 matches, and remain a chance to play finals.

Matthews acknowledged his contract would be discussed at the end of the season, seemingly quashing speculation that
Michael Voss would step in to coach the Lions post-2008.

“The club has said they would like to talk at the end of the season and I’m happy with that,” Matthews said.

FootyHeads, with Brisbane moving to re-sign Leigh Matthews, when will Michael Voss get the chance to realise his coaching aspirations?

TACKLING THE KEY TO LIONS SUCCESS

Sunday, August 5th, 2007 at 12:29 pm

BY STEPHEN BAKER

Brisbane Lions Coach Leigh Matthews attributes a concerted focus on tackling as a significant factor in his team’s current run of wins.

“Good teams tackle very well”, said Matthews last night after his team beat North Melbourne by 37 points in a lackluster game at the Gabba in Brisbane.

“That’s one of the building blocks of any good team performance”.

“The last 5 weeks, our tackling pressure has been exceptional”.

The Lions lead the competition in tackles per game and are second overall in total tackles with 1285.

Brisbane has won their last 5 games, launching them into finals contention after heading to the mid-season break with 4 wins and seven losses, as well as a draw against Richmond.

GAME MORE IMPORTANT FOR MATTHEWS

Monday, June 4th, 2007 at 2:21 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

BRISBANE Lions coach Leigh Matthews admits the build up to this week’s clash against the Western Bulldogs at the GABBA on Saturday night will be massive but says the game itself is more important.

Speaking from his weekly press conference in Brisbane, Matthews spoke about the build up for Jason Akermanis’ return to Brisbane, after his highly publicised departure at the end of last season.

“It will be a highly publicised week no doubt,” Matthews said. “But we have to concentrate on the game. Ultimately the game itself is what the footy department have to concentrate on.”

ANTI EEYORE WEEK

Monday, May 28th, 2007 at 2:29 pm

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

BRISBANE Lions coach Leigh Matthews has labelled this week an “anti- Eeyore” around the club, after the Lions’ 33- point loss to Collingwood on Saturday night.

Eeyore is a character from the book series Whinnie- the- Pooh and is described as a pessimistic, gloomy, old and depressed donkey, traits Matthew’s hopes the Lions keep distance from.

As reported on SEN, Matthews said: “This will be an Eeyore free week. Monday morning means a new week, the sky is blue and we will start nil- all against Richmond.”

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

THE BRISBANE Lions have layed down the law, encouraging former triple- premiership full- back Mal Michael to sue his former club or shut-up.

As reported in today’s Age, Lions’ chief executive Paul Bowers launched a stingy attack last night saying that Michael would not have a legal leg to stand on if he pursued the $50,000 to which he felt entitled.

“Mal’s said he’s been planning to sue us for some time … and I just wish he’d either get on with it or just stop. If he wants to sue us we’d vigorously defend it,” Bowers said.

The Bombers and Lions play this Saturday at the Telstra Dome in what is expected to be a fiery encounter.

MATTHEWS BELIEVES AFL ARE GRANDSTANDING

Monday, April 30th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

BRISBANE Lions coach Leigh Matthews says yesterdays meeting between the AFL and the West Coast Eagles was nothing more than “window dressing”.

Matthews said the league could have sent an email or a letter to the Eagles to deal with the issues discussed yesterday, but instead they chose to hold a meeting the Lions coach decsribed as nothing more than “a public relations exercise”.

The Brisbane Lions coach also asked why the AFL wouldn’t use the “Bringing the game into dis-repute” charge on Ben Cousins just as they used it on him back in 1985 when he had an on-field altercation with Geelong’s Neville Bruns.

Matthews believes Cousins, who arrived back in Perth today, should be suspended from the game for a minimum of twelve weeks for his alleged drug abuse.

TOP MARKS FOR THAT SHINBONER SPIRIT

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

MIKE “Magic” McLean from Triple M Football chooses his top five from round four.

1. Kangaroos - Smashed all week for off-field issues and written off as a non-competitive unit on-field, the Roos were fantastic against the Brisbane Lions. The Lions form was far better than the Kangaroos but the Roos committment was first rate and they showed the Gold Coast community what the club is famous for.

2. Robert Murphy - A knee injury took him out of the game last year and his first couple of games this year made you wonder if we would ever see the sublime Murphy skill again. Our fears were allayed on Friday night as Murphy turned in a classy second half performance to ice the Doggies cake against the Tigers.

3. Essendon - Many thought the Bomber bubble would burst after their second half fade-out against Carlton. However they showed they are a real threat by diposing of St. Kilda on Saturday. The Saints are seen as a quality outfit so for the Bombers to knock them off so easily is a very good sign for Kevin Sheedy and his team from Windy Hill.

4. Josh Mahoney - Has always been a strong performer for Port at home but very rarely fires a shot away from AAMI Stadium. On Saturday against Collingwood at the MCG Port trailed at three-quarter-time and needed someone to step up - enter Mahoney who had a slashing final quarter having eight quality possssions and laying some solid tackles in the wet.

5. Adelaide - While Melbourne and to a lesser extent Richmond are being let off the hook because of injuries no side has an injury list as bad as the Crows. After round one when they were beaten by Essendon they were gone - but three weeks later they have wins over the Dogs, Port and Sydney. This is a very good footy team that is only going to get better as the season goes on.

Apologies to - Brendon Lade, Paul Haselby and Hawthorn

Must do better - Richmond, Geelong and Brisbane Lions

David James on gay footballers

David James on gay footballers

April 16th, 2007 · 4 Comments

People often wonder why I love sport so much, especially football of all codes. My one true love though is football of the round-ball variety and it’s not just because I love the game. It seems to have the ability through it’s sheer popularity and deep history, among other things, to offer up moments that just make me smile, like when Barcelona PAID UNICEF for the honour of wearing their name on the Barca shirt. (Barca had never had a shirt sponsor previously).

Today there’s a little item in The Guardian written by David James, currently a keeper for Portsmouth. Even though he used to drive me crazy with his ‘Calamity James’ antics when he played for Liverpool, he has always struck me as someone with half a brain, which sometimes seems like a rare commodity for a footballer. In his item he addresses the last great taboo of English football - the gay player. He points to the hypocrisy of some of the players, the nastiness of gossip and the media and wonders when and in what environment will a player finally be able to come out and be allowed to continue to play football, not suffer the same fate as the only player to have come out, Justin Fashanu.

BROWN UNDER PRESSURE

BY BRAD KLIBANSKY

BRISBANE Lions star forward and co- captain Jonothan believes the loss of Daniel Bradshaw to a season ending knee injury, is set to increase his work load significantly and put added pressure on him to perform.

As reported in today’s Herald Sun, Brown admitted yesterday his job would now be a lot tougher without Bradshaw, who was the clubs leading goal kicker last season, but believes he is has the experience to handle the extra work load.

“I think I will have to work overtime this year, but hopefully Leigh will have a couple of other options up his sleeve,” Brown said.

“It probably does mean a greater workload but I’m an experienced enough campaigner now to get out there and get the job done.”

Brown will be looking to start the season off with a win, when the Brisbane Lions play Hawthorn in their season opener at the Gabba on Saturday night.

“The way sport teams are being led is a changing environment in the modern era - why not go with this system? It seems like a better system,” Lions coach Leigh Matthews told the Brisbane Times.

Matthews also said that during the season there would not be a different captain every week, but rather the co- captains would share the on- and off -field duties and responsibilities equally throughout the season.

HOOPER RETURNS HOME

THE Brisbane Lions have received some good news on the eve of the NAB Cup with the return of young gun Rhan Hooper, who suddenly left the club two months ago citing personal reasons for his departure.

Hooper and his manager Peter Whitehead met with Brisbane Lions Coach Leigh Matthews and football manager Graham Allan yesterday to discuss his future with the Lions. Hopper told the Club he had wished to continue his 11- game career with the Lions and resume training immediately.

Coach Leigh Matthews said the Club would honour Hooper’s request, but ruled out an immediate return to senior action.
“We owe it to our members and supporters to be transparent wherever possible,” Matthews said. “Rhan has said he wants to resume training and the Club has agreed to his request.

“However, he will require a couple of months of serious catch- up training before he can even be considered to play.”

The Lions have taken measures within the AFLPA guidelines to discipline Hooper with a $7000 fine for his two- month absence.

THREE former Brisbane Lions players, including former premiership captain and Brownlow Medallist Michael Voss, as well as present Lions midfielder Simon Black were interviewed by Victoria Police yesterday regarding a Melbourne hotel brawl last September.

As reported in today’s Age, Police flew to Brisbane this week to interview 2002 Brownlow medallist Black, recently retired premiership captain Voss and former teammate Craig McRae as well as former Lion and present assistant coach Craig Lambert over a ugly incident that occured at St Kilda’s Prince of Wales Hotel that left a man unconscious.

“Two officers from the St Kilda police station have travelled to Brisbane to gather information from the current and former Lions employees about the matter that occurred back in September 2006,” a Lions spokesman said.

“The club understands that all concerned are giving the police full co-operation with their inquiries.

“The club is disappointed at having any employees involved in police investigations.

“No further comment can be made by the club at this stage as the matter is now in the hands of the police.”

There have been no charges laid over the incident at the present time.
